Butter + Sugar = Joy

I’m Maya and I’m the co-founder and baker at Butter + Sugar. I started baking gluten-free when my 2-year old son was diagnosed with Celiac Disease in 2010. I’m not going to lie, I was completely overwhelmed by the diagnosis. As our family adjusted to a gluten-free life, I used to spend hours researching brands and their gluten-free status.  Grocery shopping was an especially tedious event as I meticulously read every label. And, I spent a lot of time trying to find gluten-free recipes that “worked.”

My daughter was born a few months after my son’s diagnosis, and even though it turned out that she can eat gluten, we decided to keep our house dedicated gluten-free. It was important to me and my husband that both our kids knew they could eat whatever treats stocked our pantry. How could we keep our son from having to question whether something in the pantry was “safe” for him and, on the flipside, how could we ensure our daughter never felt like she was “missing out” because she had to be GF at home?

The solution? Create some pretty awesome treats that are bothdelicious and gluten-free. No one should have to compromise when it comes to a cookie!

I believe that eating a delicious baked treat is an act of joy and a celebration that should not be diminished by a gluten-free diet. No child or adult should ever feel like they are eating something that is “good-for-gluten-free” especially when it comes to treats.  Instead, they should eat something because it actually just plain tastes good. And, between you and me, our cookies don’t just taste good, they taste amazing

The most common compliment we receive is that you can’t even tell that our cookies are gluten-free. Wow! As a baker and as a mom, nothing makes me happier. I love the joy on a Celiac customer’s face when they get to enjoy a Butter + Sugar cookie. And, I love it even more when that customer breaks one of our oversized cookies in half to share with a friend, knowing that whether that person can eat gluten or not, they will absolutely love the cookie. We want to make life a party and everyone is invited!
